ABOUT *
Open Door Drama was formed around 30 years ago. ODD was created to be open to all comers and all abilities, giving people of all abilities and backgrounds the chance to be involved and give it a go. We have seen it have a transformational effect on some of our members in terms of their confidence, communication and interpersonal skills. All you need to join is a passion for theatre and performance!
For all our members, Open Door Drama is a hugely rewarding hobby, that allows you express and explore your creative side. Each production is managed and produced, usually, through members of our commitee, but all members are encouraged to explore whichever avenue of theatre interests them, whether that be performing, writing or working backstage.
We also have groups for our younger members. There’s the Juniors group (P4-P7) and the Youth group (S1-S6). All members are welcome to take part in the main Open Door Drama shows.
We perform several shows each year. Firstly we take part in the Shetland County Drama Annual Drama Festival in March, producing a couple of shows along with shows from our Youth & Junior groups as well.
We usually do a summer production which is not always solely theatrical, alternatively we may produce a musical or variety night. Our Youth & Junior groups also have summer clubs, and clubs throughout the autumn and winter term, which end with a performance from each group.
Then in the winter months we either produce our bienniel Pantomime and in the alternate years a number of our members take part in Shetland County Drama’s musical piece.

“It’s a chance to escape real life and be someone else for a while. It’s also lovely to see or hear the audience reactions to whatever you’re doing. The exhilaration of being someone else on stage is just amazing.” - Ruth
“Open Door Drama Group is more than just a place to act or perform - it’s a community, a creative outlet, and a bit of light in the darker months.
Being part of this group gives me something to look forward to in the winter months.
It’s a space where everyone is welcome, where you can be yourself (or someone totally different on stage!)” - Celestine
“Open Door, it’s a place you can come and the door is never locked for anyone, any age.” - Torana
“The group is very welcoming and it feels that we are doing projects amoungst a group of friends, while still setting and achieving high standards of production and performance. It’s a really safe space for people to come and put together a show. Once the performance is done, I miss it and can’t wait until we do the next one.” - Kevin
“Being a member of ODD is such a good experience as all are welcomed as friends and part of our drama family, every member is valued. It’s fun and entertaining. There are loads of opportunities, whatever your interests.” - Ann
“Open Door Drama has done such incredible things for my daughter and her self confidence. When she first started she was quiet and a bit timid, now she has a tonne more confidence. The friendships built over the years in ODD have also become some of her best friends and like a 2nd family.” - Loretta
